I have a gut feeling that Danielle Allen plans her writing schedule and sometime along the way says, "Let me go ahead and write something, release it in January, and leave the readers with something they will remember for the entire year!" I truly believe this because Broken Clocks which was released in January 2018 is still on my mind. Annabelle and Lee is one of Poe's most beloved poems and Allen's spin on it is quite the journey.
I tried to look away, but I couldn't.
And he saw it.
He saw my heart.
He saw my soul.
He saw my truth.
I was completely exposed.
I mean, COME ON! If that isn't love then I don't want it.
Sometimes folks take a classic, put their spin on it and it becomes a hot mess. I can't say that about Annabelle and Lee. It is such a fresh and modern take on something that was written in 1849.
There was so much to unpack in this one. Are we truly able to experience life altering love as kids? What kind of self sabotage do we cause when we refuse to face childhood trauma? Are we going through the motions/settling in the love department because we want to play it safe?
Allen has proven that she can write with the best of them in the romantic comedy genre with titles such as Sweatpants Season and Disasters in Dating. Allen has proven that she can hold her own in the mystery/suspense genre with her The Women of V series. But, romance is her sweet spot. It is what she does best. If you haven't read anything by Danielle Allen, then I highly suggest that you do!
